London, England—August 11, 2023—AI contouring technologies, including Contour ProtégéAI*, are recommended to help plan radiotherapy treatment within England’s National Health Service (NHS). The National Institute for Health Care Excellence (NICE) in England released this draft guidance.
According to NICE, this is the first time the body has recommended using AI in healthcare. Reasons cited for the new recommendation include the potential to reduce costs and give overextended healthcare providers more time for patients and complex cases.
Program Director for Health Technologies at NICE Sarah Byron said, “NHS colleagues working on the front line in radiotherapy departments are under severe pressure with thousands of people waiting for scans. The role imaging plays in radiotherapy treatment planning is quite pivotal, so recommending the use of AI technologies to help support treatment planning alongside clinical oversight by a trained healthcare professional could save both time and money.”
“MIM Software is pleased to be one of the approved AI contouring providers recommended for use in the NHS,” said Jay Obman, Product Manager for Contour ProtégéAI. He added: “We work every day with clinics around the world that use Contour ProtégéAI to dramatically reduce the time needed to contour OARs. We’re excited to carry that work forward with NHS cancer care teams in England.”
